Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) : Types of Cases : Pet Matters

For many people, pets are part of a family’s structure. In some situations, the emotional attachment to pets is akin to a parent/child relationship. When a relationship ends, disagreements can arise over a number of topics related to the family pet(s). Such topics include future residence, access and decisions about on-going and long-term care.

In Minnesota, the area of pet law and pet mediation is evolving. Nationally, the increasing importance of pets in our society and the emotional bond that exists between many owners and their pets has resulted in the need and desire for agreements that specifically address pet related topics.

At DRS, we can assist clients in seeking creative solutions to pet matters from adoption of basic guidelines all the way to more complex resolutions regarding residence and contact schedule, pet insurance, decision-making regarding pet care, and pet trusts. We can also help our clients create protocols for modifying agreed upon terms and conditions upon future events.
